Knights win SPC 4A crown

The Episcopal Knights are back on top of the Southwest Preparatory Conference 4A for the first time since 2014.

In the title game Saturday night at Butler Stadium, Episcopal topped Kinkaid 42-21 after losing to the Falcons the previous two championship games.

The Knights (9-1), who finished the year on an eight-game winning streak, rushed for 454 yards. Junior Quon Marion totaled 270 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns. Sophomore Adrian Cormier scored twice and totaled 119 yards.

“We went to a ‘22’ personnel,” Leisz said. “We had a fullback and two tight ends. Every week we see a defense that we can’t prepare for because we don’t know what they are going to bring. We played them earlier in the year and they played a different defense tonight. It takes a half to really get an idea of what they got and what they want to do. Once we dissect it, then we are golden.”

Episcopal scored on a quick 1-yard pop pass from Nick Mayberry to Graham to make it 7-0.

Kinkaid got a 95-yard kick return from Cameron Henry to tie the game right up, and after a three-andout by the Knights, the Falcons

took the lead on their next drive.

On a flea-flicker, quarterback Jackson Griggs found Victor Garza on a 35-yard pass to the left corner of the end zone to make it 14-7 Falcons.

On just the third play of the ensuing Knights drive, Quon Marion made an explosive play through the line and into open space. He then legged out a 71-yard score to tie it up.

Adrian Cormier scored from 16 yards out at the 8:49 mark to break the tie.

After both teams fumbled and lost it, Episcopal went up two scores as Cormier scored on a 14-yard run with 15 seconds left in the third quarter.
