OU edges TCU, clinches spot in title game

-

NORMAN, Okla. — Jalen Hurts passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more and No. 9 Oklahoma beat TCU 28-24 on Saturday night to clinch a spot in the Big 12 championship game.

Hurts ran for 173 yards and passed for 145. He became the third Oklahoma quarterback to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season.

Kennedy Brooks added 149 yards rushing for the Sooners (10-1, 7-1), who kept their College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Max Duggan rushed for 92 and a touchdown for the Horned Frogs (5-6, 3-5), who missed a chance to become bowl eligible.

Oklahoma won its 20th consecutive November game dating to 2014. The Sooners outgained the Horned Frogs 511 yards to 204, but turned the ball over three times.

Oklahoma ran out to a 21-0 lead and led 21-10 at halftime. Hurts threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score before the break.

The Sooners led 28-17 and looked ready to put the Horned Frogs away, but Vernon Scott intercepted Hurts and ran it back 98 yards for a touchdown, and TCU cut Oklahoma’s lead to 28-24 with 12:43 to play.

The Sooners drove again, and Hurts broke a long run before Nook Bradford ripped the ball out of his arm and gained possession in one fluid motion inside the TCU 10rd line.

TCU drove inside Oklahoma territory, but Brendan RadleyHiles intercepted Duggan’s pass with 1:41 to play.

Oklahoma needed a first down to put the game out of reach. On third-and-short, Hurts ran up the middle and was awarded the first down. Upon review, the decision stood.

OKLAHOMA STATE 20, WEST VIRGINIA 13

Chuba Hubbard set career highs with seven catches for 88 yards in the No. 21 Cowboys’ victory over the Mountaineers in Morgantown, W.Va.

Oh, and the sophomore also surpassed 100 yards rushing for the ninth consecutive game to push his total to 1,832 yards.

Hubbard and quarterback Dru Brown, who threw two touchdown passes in his first start, generated just enough offense for the Cowboys (8-3, 5-3 Big 12), who won their fourth straight.

Hubbard entered the game with 82 receiving yards all season and Gundy had emphasized earlier in the week he didn’t throw to Hubbard that often out of fear of injury.

Hubbard ran 46 yards with a screen pass to set up Oklahoma State’s first touchdown.

Hubbard ran 26 times for 106 yards, far below his 173-yard average, but he ran for 47 yards on two key second-half drives that helped Oklahoma State take control.

Brown marched Oklahoma State the length of the field early in the fourth quarter, hitting Dillon Stoner with a 2-yard scoring pass for a 17-13 lead.

West Virginia (4-7, 2-6) didn’t have as much luck inside the red zone.

The Mountaineers couldn’t convert on three plays from the 1-yard line in the second quarter and they twice had to settle for short field goals.

Leddie Brown converted a fourth-and-1 from the Oklahoma State 18 with 2:37 left in the game. But Jarret Doege threw three incompletions, the Mountaineers turned the ball over on downs and Oklahoma State ran out the clock.

KANSAS STATE 30, TEXAS TECH 27

Joshua Youngblood returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Skylar Thompson passed for 246 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas State (7-4, 4-4) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Blake Lynch kicked two 32yard field goals and a 43-yarder for Kansas State.

IOWA STATE 41, KANSAS 31

Brock Purdy threw for 372 yards and four touchdowns — including the game-clinching one on fourth-and-goal from the 4 — and No. 22 Iowa State rallied to beat Kansas in Ames, Iowa, and clinch its third straight winning season.

La’Michael Pettway had 96 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Cyclones (7-4, 5-3 Big 12), who’ve now complied three consecutive winning years just twice in the modern era.

Kansas (3-8, 1-7) scored two touchdowns in just 77 seconds late in the third quarter, the second coming after Purdy threw an interception, to jump ahead

24-21.

Purdy responded with a 24yard TD pass to Breece Hall, and he ran for a five-yard touchdown with 5:10 left to put Iowa State back on top 34-31.
