Texas survives scare against McNeese State

AUSTIN — Courtney Ramey made two free throws with 8.4 seconds left, enabling Texas to escape with a 73-71 victory against McNeese State on Saturday.

McNeese’s Leondre Washington missed a 3point attempt at an upset with three seconds remaining.

Ramey and Andrew Jones led Texas (6-1) with 14 points apiece. Each made a 3-point basket during the final 3:13, as did Jase Febres.

Jericho Sims had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Longhorns.

McNeese forward Sha’Markus Kennedy punished Texas inside with a game-high 22 points. Washington added 17 for the Cowboys (2-6). Dru Kuxhausen scored 12, hitting four of five 3-pointers, but he missed a driving shot with nine seconds left and then fouled Ramey.

Washington’s 3-pointer with 1:33 left gave McNeese State a 69-68 lead. Jones put Texas back ahead with a 3-pointer, but Kennedy tied it with 56 seconds remaining.

TENNESSEE 72, VCU 69

Lamonte Turner made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the No. 17 Volunteers a win over the 20th-ranked Rams in the Emerald Coast

Classic third-place game at Niceville, Fla.

Turner’s big shot spoiled a dramatic comeback by the Rams, who trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half.

John Fulkerson led Tennessee (6-1) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Bowden added 14 points and Turner scored 12 for the Vols.

Marcus Santos-Silva led VCU (6-2) with 22 points.

XAVIER 87, LIPSCOMB 62

Tyrique Jones had his fourth double-double of the season, Paul Scruggs scored 15 points, and the 25th-ranked Musketeers recovered from their first loss by beating the Bisons in Cincinnati.

Xavier (7-1) was coming off 70-65 loss to Florida in the title game of the Charleston Classic.

Tyler Bey pulled down 17 rebounds and scored 11 points, including a reverse layup off a sensationa­l spin on his way to the basket in the closing minutes as the No. 21 Buffaloes (6-0) fended off the scrappy Hornets in Boulder, Colo.

TEXAS SOUTHERN 76 LAMAR 73

Bryson Etienne made two free throws in the final seconds to secure the

Tigers’ win over the Cardinals at H&PE Arena.

John Walker III led Texas Southern (2-5) with a career-best 20 points. Justin Hopkins added 10 with seven rebounds.

Davion Buster finished with 23 points, tying his career high, for Lamar (4-4) which has lost three in a row.

Gerard Andrus converted four straight from the line in the final half minute to allow the Panthers (3-5) to hold off the Roadrunner­s

(1-6) in San Antonio.

Women LOUISVILLE 72, OREGON 62

The No. 8 Cardinals handed the top-ranked Ducks their first loss of the season, getting 18 points and 15 rebounds from Kylee Shook in a victory at the Paradise Jam tournament in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Dana Evans scored 17 points, Elizabeth Balogun had 11 points, and Jazmine Jones scored 10 for Louisville (8-0) to claim the tournament’s Island Division title and give coach Jeff Walz a signature win.

Satou Sabally scored 21 points to lead four players in double figures for Oregon (6-1).

SOUTH CAROLINA 74 BAYLOR 59

Freshman Aliyah Boston had a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, and the No. 5 Gamecocks pulled away in the fourth quarter to upset the second-ranked Lady Bears at the Paradise Jam.

Tyasha Harris also had 20 points and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan added 13 for

South Carolina (8-1), which won the tournament’s Reef Division title.

NaLyssa Smith had 18 points and Te’a Cooper and Juicy Landrum added 10 apiece for Baylor (7-1), which had its 36-game winning streak snapped after top-ranked Oregon lost earlier Saturday.

NORTHERN ARIZONA 57

Erica Ogwumike scored a season-high 26 points on 10-of-20 shooting, and the Owls erased an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat the Lumberjack­s at Tudor Fieldhouse. Haylee Swayze added 14 points off the bench for Rice (4-3).

TEXAS 63, NORTH TEXAS 57

Charli Collier scored 21 points with 14 rebounds, Joyner Holmes added 10 points and 10 boards, and the Longhorns (4-3) edged the Mean Green in Rainbow Wahine Showdown at Honolulu.

Randi Thompson scored 15 points to lead North Texas (3-4).

NOTRE DAME 67 SOUTH FLORIDA 51

Anaya Peoples scored 18 points, Destinee Walker added 17, and the Fighting Irish broke away after halftime to beat the No. 21 Bulls in the Cancun Challenge at Cancun, Mexico.
