Mustangs make school history with win
Katy Taylor defeated Humble 35-14 in a Class 6A Division II regional semifinal Saturday at NRG Stadium, making school history with the win.
It’s the first time the Mustangs have won a regional semifinal game in school history.
Taylor (8-5) advances to the regional final, where the Mustangs will play Cypress Creek at 2 p.m. Saturday at NRG Stadium.
“We talked about it all week, making history,” Taylor coach Chad Simmons said. “This is the first time in Taylor history, so it’s awesome.”
The Wildcats (10-3) were in the regional semifinals for the first time since 2010.
The 10 wins and two playoff victories are the most wins for Humble coach Charles West since he arrived in 2010.
“It was magical,” Humble coach West said. “I’m all about my kids. I think they played as hard as they could all season, and tonight we came up a little short.”
Taylor jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half, starting with CJ Tolbert’s 2-yard TD run on the Mustangs’ opening possession.
Taylor came up with an interception, and the offense turned it into points as J Jensen III hit Gavin Belue for a 4-yard TD.
The Mustangs’ defense wasn’t done yet, and Trevor Woods picked off Humble quarterback Dexter Wyble, returning it 90 yards for a touchdown.
Humble didn’t go away and answered right back with two TDs in the second quarter.
Wyble connected with Donald
Harper for a 60-yard TD pass and found Robert Williams III for another TD pass, this one for 40 yards for the Wildcats’ last points of the season.
Taylor outscored Humble 17-0 in the second half.
Jensen connected with Belue again, this time for a 22-yard TD pass. The junior quarterback then hit Griffin Dougherty for a 45-yard TD pass before kicker Renan
Baeta hit a 32-yard field goal to seal the victory.
