Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporat­ed sponsored its 16th Biennial Debutante Ball on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the beautifull­y decorated Marriott Marquis Hotel. Royal Roses of Excellence...An Elegant Affair was the theme as twenty-one young ladies celebrated their debut to society. Debutantes Regan Williams, Kalyn Prothro and Taylor Crawford were the scholarshi­p winners. Debutante Cydne Harrell-Malveaux won the video essay contest. The debutante class was so warm and welcoming that there was a three-way tie for Miss Congeniali­ty: Taylor Crawford, Cydne Harrell- Malveaux and Regan Williams.

The Debutante Season began with a worship service at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and was followed by a get acquainted brunch at Brennan’s of Houston for the mothers and debutantes. Throughout the Debutante Season, a plethora of social and educationa­l workshops and activities were scheduled for the 2019 Class. Included among the workshops were an etiquette class and tea at The St. Regis Houston Hotel; styling and fashion tips at Tootsies; a leadership developmen­t and financial literacy class at JP Morgan Chase Bank; a social media and politics 101 class; a vision board goal-oriented activity; and a community service project at the Houston Food Bank.

A beautiful reception was held for the debutantes, their families and community leaders. The debutantes received Proclamati­ons from Mayor Sylvester Turner, Congresswo­man Sheila Jackson Lee, Council Member Amanda K. Edwards, Council Member Martha Castex -Tatum and Judge Nikita V. Harmon.

In addition to the chapter’s workshops and activities, numerous fabulous events were presented by the mothers for the young ladies.

Indeed the highlight of the season was the elegant debutante ball. The debutantes were gorgeous in their white, flowing gowns. Group Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmen­tal Affairs for H-E-B Winell Herron and the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and M.D. Anderson Professor in Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston Dr. Antonio D. Tillis introduced the debutantes. Willie Mae Evans served as general chairman with Dorothy Jean Booker and Pamela Michelle Evans as general co-chairmen. Cherise Story serves as the chapter president.

It was a grand event for over 500 who attended the 2019 Debutante Ball. The young ladies were involved in a memorable experience that will last a lifetime.
