HomeAid observes holidays with food baskets
In observance of Homeless Awareness Month in November and the Holiday Season, HomeAid Houston organized a food drive to fill dozens of baskets for several homeless-care agencies that would ensure single mothers and their children, and children aging out of foster care, would enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. They were also provided with new, donated blankets.
HomeAid collected an assortment of Thanksgiving items at their office at the Greater Houston Builders Association and assembled the holiday dinner baskets to donate to two of their homeless care providers — Angel Reach and Fort Bend Women’s Center (FBWC). Partnering with these organizations helps them continue their mission to “build new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach.”
HomeAid collected the foods that define a Thanksgiving feast. They included boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, friend onions, canned cranberry sauce, canned mushroom soup, canned corn, canned yams, canned green beans, canned or powdered gravy, foil turkey roaster pans and non-perishable pumpkin spice flavored desserts.
To help assist in purchasing a turkey, HomeAid also received nearly 30 $25 H-E-B gift cards.
“The looks on the faces of the families receiving the food baskets and blankets reflect what giving is all about,” said Patrick Mayhan, president of HomeAid Houston. “These children and families were delighted to observe Thanksgiving like millions of others in our country.
HomeAid was honored to facilitate this effort on behalf of all the companies and individuals who participated.”
The agencies receiving the baskets and blankets are providing critical services that will change lives and help their clients to emerge into the community as productive and happy individuals and families. Angel Reach assists children who are aging out of foster care and have no life-skills or family support and Fort Bend Women’s Center assists survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children to achieve safety and self-sufficiency, while striving to prevent violence against women.
“To many, a Thanksgiving meal is taken for granted,” said Jessica Brewster with FBWC. “But the moms and children here at FBWC are honored to receive this generous donation from people they’ve never met. That is the true meaning of the Season of Giving.”
HomeAid Houston is a 501(c)(3) charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA). The agency was established in 2003 to work with Houston homeless care providers to build and renovate shelters that transform lives.
By partnering with GHBA builders, remodelers, developers and suppliers, HomeAid is able to effectively multiply the impact of gifts provided by generous donors.
Since 2003, HomeAid Houston has completed 54 projects that added more than $14 million in real estate to Houston’s homeless community.
