CONDO LIFE

- By Valerie Sweeten

Building spotlight: The Manhattan

When the presence of luxury condos started making an impression on the city of Houston, The Manhattan was at the forefront in the early 2000s.

Located at 3030 Post Oak Blvd. in the heart of the Galleria and Uptown District, this New York-inspired development was sold out at completion.

Included for residents were views of downtown, the Water Wall, Lakes of

Post Oak and the Williams Tower, as well as abundant outdoor access and an affordable maintenance fee.

Real estate developer

Randall Davis of Randall Davis Co. is no stranger to the Houston condominium market.

Davis’ properties, which are numerous in Houston, include Hotel Icon, Cosmopolitan, Gotham, Metropolis, and Astoria. Downtown near the Toyota Center is The Marlowe, and The Arabella, next to the River Oaks District and a few blocks from the Galleria.

The concept for The Manhattan, which was built in 2002, was unique in a mid-rise setting of nine floors.

“It was designed to emulate New York lofts with 20 feet ceilings and big, beautiful windows. There are

brick Corinthian columns and an aged copper roof all built into a red brick building. Nobody had done this before. It gave the building an old look,” Davis said.

According to The New York Times 2003 article, SoHo-Inspired Lofts with

Views of Houston, it has 63 residences with 22 different floor plans.

It stated that its creators described it as “reminiscent of the historic buildings that flanked New York City’s

Fifth and Park Avenues in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”

Included as part of The Manhattan are six threestory brownstone townhouses facing the outdoor green space.

Indoors, residents are able to enjoy “spectacular views” in this ‘A++’” location.

Additional amenities include concierge, wine room, catering kitchen, garage, and pool. Home accents are top notch.

“I did the floor plans myself,” Davis said. “I wanted to make it New York-lofty style. Back then, we were using oversized showers. The kitchens are pretty with interior brick exposed walls. There are real hardwood oak floors. In the penthouses, there are more deluxe kitchens, upgraded wood floors and upgraded stones.”

The Manhattan’s location also lends itself to prime walkability for its residents.

The Galleria is within walking distance, as are grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, and numerous restaurant choices. In addition, an upcoming Post Oak bus line will be in proximity to travel wherever you desire.

Outdoors is also a plus here, with ample green property surrounding the building. Behind The Manhattan, residents can find peace and solitude at the nearby lake for walking and feeding the ducks.
