Jones scores 27 as TSU falls to Arizona St.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Remy Martin scored 23 points, Alonzo Verge Jr. also scored 23 points with seven assists and Arizona State defeated Texas Southern 98-81 on Saturday.

The Sun Devils (9-4) ended a two-game losing streak with 57 percent shooting, including 12 of 25 on 3-pointers.

John Jones led Texas Southern (3-9) with 27 points.

The Tigers have lost four of their last five games.

A 10-1 run helped Texas Southern reduce a 16-point deficit to a 29-22 Arizona State lead.

Arizona State used an 8-0 run to go up 37-22 with 4:36 to go in the first half.

The Sun Devils took a 59-40 lead early in the second half on a 3-pointer from Verge. But Texas Southern answered with a 21-9 run to make it 68-61 with 11:32 to play. Jones hit a pair of 3s during that stretch.

Back-to-back transition baskets after a Jalen House 3-pointer effectivel­y ended the Tigers’ upset hopes. House, a freshman, hit 5 of 7 3-pointers for 20 points, tying a season high.

KENTUCKY 78 LOUISVILLE 70, OT

Nick Richards had 13 points, including seven consecutiv­e in overtime, and host No. 19 Kentucky scored the final eight points for a victory over No. 3 Louisville in a thrilling Bluegrass rivalry showdown.

Immanuel Quickley and Tyrese Maxey provided a six-point cushion from the line. Maxey’s free throws capped a career-best 27point performanc­e while Richards had 10 rebounds to end a two-game losing streak by the Wildcats (9-3).

Steven Enoch had 18 points for the Cardinals (11-2).

DUKE 75, BROWN 50

Vernon Carey Jr. scored 19 points to help No. 4 Duke beat visiting Brown.

Alex O’Connell added 14 points and Wendell Moore Jr. had 10 points for the Blue Devils (11-1).

Brandon Anderson scored 16 points to lead Brown in its third consecutiv­e loss.

MEMPHIS 97

NEW ORLEANS 55

Precious Achiuwa had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Lester Quinones added 13 points as No. 9 Memphis built a first-half lead and easily beat visiting New Orleans.

Memphis (11-1) extended its winning streak to nine. Tyler Harris finished with 11 points, while DJ Jeffries and Isaiah Maurice added 10 points each.

Troy Green led the Privateers with 22 points as New Orleans (4-8) lost its third straight.

BUTLER 67 LOUISIANA-MONROE 36

Derrik Smits scored 16 points off the bench to lead 12th-ranked Butler to a victory over visiting Louisiana-Monroe.

Bryce Nze and Sean McDermott scored 10 points for the Bulldogs (12-1), who have won three in a row.

FLORIDA STATE 88 NORTH ALABAMA 71

Malik Osborne scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half as No. 17 Florida State cruised to a win over visiting North Alabama.

Balsa Koprivica added 13 points for Florida State (11-2).

Jamari Blackmon scored 15 points for North Alabama (5-8).

SAN DIEGO STATE 73 CAL POLY 57

Malachi Flynn scored 14 points and No. 15 San Diego State overcame a slow start to beat visiting Cal Poly and remain one of three undefeated teams nationally.

Yanni Wetzell and Jordan Schakel added 12 points apiece for the Aztecs (13-0).

Kyle Colvin scored 13 points, and Junior Ballard had 12 for the Mustangs.

Women INDIANA 79 MICHIGAN STATE 67

Ali Patberg scored 23 points and No. 14 Indiana took over in the second half to open Big Ten play with a win over visiting Michigan State.

Taryn McCutcheon had 15 points and reached the 1,000-point plateau for the Spartans (7-5).

STANFORD 67, UC DAVIS 55

Haley Jones scored a season-high 21 points and had 11 rebounds to help No. 5 Stanford beat visiting UC Davis.

Evanne Turner scored 15 points to lead the Aggies (4-8).

MARYLAND 70 MICHIGAN 55

Kaila Charles had 23 points and 11 rebounds to help host No. 12 Maryland beat No. 23 Michigan in both teams’ Big Ten opener.

Charles moved into ninth place on Maryland’s all-time scoring list.

Amy Dilk led Michigan with 18 points.
