Fatal shootings mark new year

On New Year’s Eve, Philippa Ashford, a 61-year-old nurse, was killed by a stray bullet from what deputies believe was celebratory gunfire. The seemingly annual random acts of violence on New Year’s Eve have plagued the Houston area in recent years. On New Year’s Day, Owena McHenry was gunned down in her bedroom in South Park. Also, authorities have taken into custody a man believed to have fatally shot his fiancée three days after proposing to her on New Year's Eve.
