No. 1 Bears extend record streak

WACO — Jared Butler scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half, and topranked Baylor never trailed while tying the longest winning streak in Big 12 history at 22 games with a 70-59 victory over No. 14 West Virginia on Saturday.

The Bears (23-1, 12-0 Big 12) cruised without secondlead­ing scorer MaCio Teague, a junior whose streak of 90 consecutiv­e games ended because of a right wrist injury.

Baylor led by 19 in the first half and started the second half on a 20-3 run for its biggest lead at 53-25.

Taz Sherman scored a season-high 20 points for the Mountainee­rs (18-7, 6-6), who had 11 of their season high-tying 22 turnovers in the first 12 minutes and shot 35 percent in a third consecutiv­e loss.

Matthew Mayer had a flying dunk off a nifty spin move on the baseline and finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for the Bears, who matched Kansas’ record run in the Big 12. The Jayhawks started 22-0 in 1996-97, the league’s first season.

IOWA ST. 81, TEXAS 52

Seniors Michael Jacobson, Prentiss Nixon and Solomon Young combined for 55 points as the Cyclones blew out the Longhorns at Ames, Iowa.

“We needed this,” Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said after his team recorded its most lopsided win over the Longhorns in series history. “We had a lot of guys step up and do some really good things.”

None more than Jacobson, who notched season highs in points (21) and rebounds (13) while shooting 8 for 9 from the field.

The Cyclones (11-14, 4-8 Big 12) never trailed and started the second half with a 9-0 run that built a commanding 46-26 lead.

“It’s do or die mentality for us every game,” Jacobson said. “We’ve got to stack up some wins. We just came ready. We just came together. That’s the biggest thing all year for us, just trying to find consistenc­y. ”

Texas (14-11, 4-8) played without starters Jericho Sims (back) and Jase Febres (knee), and lost its fourth straight game.

Courtney Ramey scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Longhorns.

OKLAHOMA ST. 73 TEXAS TECH 70

Jonathan Laurent and Kalib Boone each scored 16 points to help the Cowboys upset the No. 24 Red Raiders at Stillwater, Okla.

Isaac Likekele added 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Cowboys (13-12, 3-9 Big 12).

Kevin McCullar and Davide Moretti each scored 15 points for Texas Tech (16-9, 7-5).

TCU 68, KANSAS ST. 57

Desmond Bane scored 17 points and the Horned Frogs stopped a six-game losing streak with a win over the Wildcats.

TCU (14-11, 5-7 Big 12) shot 45 percent (15-of-33) from 3-point range.

Xavier Sneed had 15 points and David Sloan had 11 more for Kansas State (9-16, 2-10 Big 12).

TEXAS SOUTHERN 77 JACKSON ST. 74

Justin Hopkins scored 23 points, and Yahuza Rasas and Tyrik Armstrong netted 20 apiece as the host Tigers overcame an 11-point deficit to win.

TSU (11-13, 8-4 SWAC) trailed Jackson State (10-15, 7-5) 39-28 at the break.

HOUSTON BAPTIST 69

Avery Sullivan had 22 points and T.J. Atwood had 19 points and as the Cardinals(13-13, 7-8 Southland Conference) won at home.

Jalon Gates had 18 points for the Huskies (3-20, 3-11). Ian DuBose added 16 points and seven assists. Philip McKenzie had eight rebounds.

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 75 GRAMBLING ST. 69

Gerard Andrus had 21 points as the host Panthers won their eighth game in a row. Devonte Patterson added 20 points for the Panthers.

Antione Lister had 18 points for Prairie View (13-11, 9-2 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

Ivy Smith Jr. had 17 points and 11 assists for the Tigers (13-12, 7-5).
