Veterans bring employers wide range of skills

- By Jan Burns CORRESPONDENT

Veterans bring unique skills to the civilian workforce of Houston. Loyalty, ability to work in a team, and technological ability are just some of the things many veterans can contribute to a company. Employers are aware of this and have responded positively by reaching out to veteran job seekers.

ConocoPhillips is a company of choice for transitioning military and their families by offering challenging and rewarding projects around the world. It recognizes the value of their experience and the transferable skills gained while in service to this country.

Becky Peavler, Lower 48 field safety and occupational health manager at ConocoPhillips, chose the company after serving in the Army.

“What drew me to ConocoPhillips was the culture of how they treated people. Even as a consultant (initially) I knew the support I was providing was valued and I felt like part of the team.”

ConocoPhillips honors its former military employees through a variety of sponsored events and activities throughout the year, such as their annual clay shoot fundraiser. In this event, local companies and wounded service men and women come together to raise funds for worthy organizations serving veterans, such as Hope for Warriors, and Team Red,

“ConocoPhillips is proud to be a military-friendly company that recognizes the life experience, technical knowledge and leadership skills that current, transitioning, or former military employees may have to share. We value the different backgrounds, ideas and skills veterans bring to ConocoPhillips, and we’re proud to employ veterans, all of whom contribute to our success,” said Heather Sirdashney, vice president of human resources, ConocoPhillips.

Phillips 66 also is committed to veteran hiring. Support for the military is part of the Phillips 66 culture, and the values the military instills complement the company values of safety, honor, and commitment.

“Phillips 66 finds that the military offers a great talent pool with jobs and skill sets that are aligned with our hiring needs. Veterans, because of their service, are leaders as well as disciplined, strategic thinkers with a level of loyalty that is unmatched,” said Hill Bruton, advisor, external communications, Phillips 66.

It sponsors military recruiting events in Houston where veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses are invited to apply and have their resumes reviewed for open positions.

Many employers say military veterans are desirable job candidates.

They are reliable workers with desired skill sets they acquired during their military service.
