High school graduations switch gears
Graduation is one of the most important milestones in any high school senior’s life, and the COVID-19 pandemic created a situation to possibly steal this moment away from area students’ senior years.
But school districts were not going to let this happen. They definitely wanted to recognize students’ years of dedication and have worked to find a solution allowing their seniors to move forward with their diploma.
For example, Cy-Fair Independent School District has set dates in July at the Berry Center for its graduates.
“Cy-Fair ISD will make every possible effort to celebrate our Class of 2020 seniors and honor their 13-year academic career,” said a Cy-Fair ISD spokesperson. Details are available at www.cfisd.net/en/parents-students/academics/ graduation-info.
Houston ISD will honor graduates in virtual ceremonies beginning in June, in addition to hosting a citywide celebration hosted by Mayor Sylvester Turner on June 5 on high school campuses.
Choosing a virtual graduation for the district’s 11,000 seniors was very difficult for interim superintendent Grenita Lathan.
“I am so proud of the accomplishments of the historic class of 2020, and the strength they have shown through this unique challenge,” Lathan added.
Each virtual ceremony will include recorded HISD messages and audio of each student’s name as their personalized slide is displayed. Each graduate will also receive their own personalized content as a gift from the school to share on social media with family and friends. Seniors will be contacted with information about the graduation.
