Setting the right example
HISD delay
Regarding “HISD to stay online-only for first 6 weeks,” (A1, July 16): I hope Grenita Lathan recognizes that she is setting a very poor example for her students and their parents. Standing before reporters to discuss how the coronavirus pandemic will delay the start of in-person instruction, she shows blatant disregard for taking the one simple step that does the most to inhibit spread of the disease: wearing a face covering.
Her failure to do so is made all the more stark by the woman standing near her, who is wearing not just a mask but a face shield.
Come on, Ms. Lathan. You’re an important community leader. Show us that you understand that — not that you don’t believe what you’re telling us. Hypocrisy is corrosive, and right now it can be deadly as well.

Refreshing coverage
I just wanted to say thank you so very much for providing quality, nutrient rich reporting in these tumultuous times. I made the switch from another news source after being continually disturbed by the deteriorating quality of “news” I was consuming. Reading the Houston Chronicle was not only completely refreshing, but it changed my entire outlook on the media as well as current events. It doesn’t hurt getting access to relevant information about my local community as well. I am a devoted customer; now and forever. Thank you for the good work.

Shutdown fallout
Regarding “Time to act is now,” (A20, July 15): Your editorial is commendable but it does not take into account what shutdowns do to businesses and their employees. The employees will lose their jobs and their paychecks. Before long they would not be able to pay the rent and they would be homeless. We do not want millions of homeless people.
The best plan is to require 100 percent of employees and customers to wear masks when in the building. Wearing high-quality masks will prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading. Prevention is better than cure any day. It would also allow the workers to keep their jobs.
Please do this to protect yourself and those around you. I wear a mask when going to Luby’s or Fadi’s for lunch. I go out to eat for good food and to help the workers keep their jobs.
