Weighing endorsements

- Marc Freedman, Houston

‘Star power’ not everything

Regarding “Can’t ignore star power,” (A20, Oct. 7): In a short sentence, I would rather vote for Sima Ladjevardian’s “passion and plenty of smarts” over Dan Crenshaw’s “star power” any day. The present occupant of the White House had plenty of star power and look where we are now. After reading your lukewarm assessment of Crenshaw’s record so far and Chris Tomlinson’s commentary in the business section, I am convinced that Crenshaw does not do his homework. His open opposition to the wearing of masks and attacks on the efforts of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 by mandating them for those out in the public made me question both his wisdom and integrity. I also questioned his understanding of making policy when he responded to my participation in a petition about damage to our environment by pointing out that he had voted for President Donald Trump’s

Great American Outdoors Act, which provides funds for the maintenance of our national parks. While I too support funding for much needed projects to repair infrastructure of our national parks, it is hardly the same thing as establishing policies that curb carbon emissions and make sure that fracking is regulated so that it does not damage the air and water of nearby farms and communities.

Yes, I am voting for Sima, who has the passion for expanding health care, who rather than ban fracking seeks to make it safer, and who supports energy renewables that, as Tomlinson pointed out in his piece, constitute the “fastest- growing source of power on the state’s grid.”

Alice Lively, Kingwood It was such a disappointment to see your endorsement of Dan Crenshaw. Talk about damning with faint praise! The message was that although he is wrong on the issues and is usually an enabler for Donald Trump’s divisive and antiscientific policies, we should vote for him because he is a rising star in the party that is advocating the wrong positions.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to support a candidate who supports unity, affordable health care and science? Sima Ladjevardian is a much better choice.
