Texas Tech defeated; Kansas St. stops slide

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Christian Braun hit a corner 3 with 24 seconds left, David McCormack scored 17 points and No. 23 Kansas beat No. 15 Texas Tech 67-61 on Saturday.

Ochai Agbaji had 14 points and Jalen Wilson added 11. Braun’s 3 made it a two-possession game and essentiall­y locked up the win for the Jayhawks (17-7, 11-5 Big 12).

“It was a big time shot, big time play,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “That’s the best we’ve played since Christmas.”

Braun and Marcus Garrett each finished with 10 points.

Marcus Santos-Silva and Kevin McCullar each scored 12 points, Mac McClung had 11 and Micah Peavy had 10 for Texas Tech (14-7, 6-6), which played its first game in 10 days but has dropped two straight.

“I think we played hard to the end, so give our guys credit,” Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said. “We need every player to play their game this time of the year and today we were just a few short.”

KANSAS ST. 62, TCU 54

Mike McGuirl scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and distribute­d five assists and the Wildcats ended their 13-game losing streak by beating the Horned Frogs at Fort Worth.

TCU a 51-46 lead with 5:01 left to play, the Wildcats (6-18, 2-13 Big 12 Conference) scored 10 straight and never looked back.

Nijel Pack scored 12 points for Kansas State.

RJ Nembhard led TCU (11-9, 4-7) with 14 points and Miles scored 13.

TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 77, LAMAR 68

Jalen White had 21 points as the Islanders won at home to break a nine-game losing streak.

De’Lazarus Keys had 15 points and eight rebounds for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-15, 1-9 Southland Conference). Myles Smith added 14 points. Simeon Fryer had 10 points.

Davion Buster had 20 points for the Cardinals (4-16, 3-9), whose losing streak stretched to five games.

Avery Sullivan added 14 points. Kasen Harrison had 13 points.

POSTPONED

The game between Sam Houston State University and Houston Baptist scheduled for Saturday night at Houston Baptist’s Sharp Gym was postponed.

Women

RICE 64, MARSHALL 48

Sophomore wing Lauren Schwartz scored 18 points and senior center Nancy Mulkey contribute­d 14 points and three blocks as the Owls won at Marshall.

The Owls (13-1, 9-0) led from start to finish after seizing control of the contest by scoring the game’s first 10 points.

Rice’s defense held Marshall to 15 first half points and 30 percent shooting for the game.

The Owls outscored the Herd in second chance points (15-6), bench points (20-9) and points in the paint (14-10) and improved 10-0 this season when winning the rebounding battle with a 38-31 edge over Marshall.

Rice remained in first place in the C-USA West standings while winning their 14th consecutiv­e league contest dating back to last year.

Marshall (5-8, 4-7)) was led in scoring by Kristen Mayo (15 points) and Kennedi Colclough (10).

HOUSTON 75 CINCINNATI 66

Dymond Gladney and Miya Crump combined for 41 points as the the Cougars won their fifth straight game with a win over the Bearcats at Cincinnati’s Fifth Third Arena.

Three Cougars closed out the day in doublefigu­res led by a seasonhigh 23 points Gladney. Crump added 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Houston (13-5, 10-4 American) got 12 points and seven rebounds from Tatyana Hill.

POSTPONED
