CHARLOTTE ANNE MCCLAIN

1948-2021

-

Charlotte Anne McClain of Houston, TX passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2021. Charlotte was born July 16, 1948, to Nell and JC Horton in Tyler, TX. When Charlotte was very young, the family moved to Orange, TX, where she grew up, graduating from Stark High School in 1966. Charlotte attended college at Texas Tech and Lamar Universities and made her home in Orange until moving to Beaumont in 1981, and later to Houston in 1985.

Charlotte considered Houston to be her home, reading the Houston Chronicle from cover to cover every morning and cheering enthusiastically for all things Houston. She spent the majority of her career with Southwestern

Bell, rising from Customer Service Agent to District Manager of Sales Operations in a career that lasted from 1973 to 2000. After retiring from Southwestern Bell, Charlotte found she was not quite ready for a life of leisure and returned to work in the finance industry with Morgan Stanley where she remained until 2010 putting her sharp mind to work.

In her second retirement, Charlotte enjoyed volunteering in her community, reading, cooking and visiting with family and friends. Charlotte’s excellent taste extended to the thoughtful gifts she would give, her fabulous wardrobe and her beautifully decorated home.

Charlotte was a dedicated mother to Caroline, her only child. She was also a fiercely loyal daughter to her parents, particularly in her care for her father, JC, after her mother, Nell, passed away in 2005. Charlotte’s talent for setting the perfect table and serving an amazing meal was known to many family, friends and neighbors who had the good fortune to be invited to a holiday meal or Sunday supper at Charlotte’s home. Charlotte’s annual Christmas gift of fresh pecans from her daughter and daughter-in-law was always an early arrival so Charlotte could then bake her famous pecan pies for friends to enjoy at their own holiday tables.

Charlotte is survived by her daughter Caroline Jordan (Jennifer Wichmann), her brother Jack Horton, her nephew Sam Horton (Kerry), her longtime and beloved partner, Ben Rice, and many Shuttleworth cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Bertha and Clark Shuttlesworth, her parents, Nell and JC Horton and her husband, Bill McClain. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

The family extends special appreciation to Dr. Theresa Vicroy, Dr. Kim Bloom, Dr. Stuart Solomon and their teams for the excellent care provided to Charlotte.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at 3:30 pm at
