System possibly upset by update

- Helpline@chron.com

Q: I just updated to Windows 10, and now I cannot access a link from email and I cannot figure out the cause and how to fix it. Any ideas?

A: When you click a weblink in an email message, your computer has to know what to do, and the way it knows what to do is by checking to see what web browser you are using by default.

When you updated to Windows 10, it likely installed Microsoft Edge and the system is simply confused by the new browser choice.

You can select a default browser by clicking on Search and typing “Default app settings” and hitting Enter.

Here you can choose which browser you have as a default. If it is already set the way you like it, try selecting a different browser and then reselecting the one you want. This will usually fix the problem.

Q: Lately it seems like you have been writing more about Apple products than usual. I thought you were the PC guy. I don’t find the Apple questions helpful at all. What gives?

A:

Like many computer users my age, I started out focusing on Windowsbased PCs. They were what I knew most about, and the majority of my readers were PC users.

I have expanded my computing interests over the years to include Apple, and there are a number of reasons for this.

Apple computers are a lot more prevalent than they used to be, and it’s more and more common that I get questions about them. Being the kind of person who wants to help computer users, I see no reason to exclude those who use them when I write about technology.

I don’t have any bias as to one platform being superior to another. In fact, I have both types of computers at home and at work. I find the Windows computer more suitable for certain tasks and the Apple computer more suitable for others.

And while I may answer

a question that is based on one system, the concepts about how to understand the problem and come to a resolution for one can often be applied to the other.

In fact, many of the questions I get are platform neutral. A fix for Chrome or Outlook on a PC can easily apply to an Apple user and vice versa.

I don’t champion one brand over another. It has always seemed ridiculous to denigrate those who use a particular brand just because they use another.

But rest assured, I will always strive for balance. Windows questions will still get the bulk of my attention because I do get more of those than anything else. But if I can help an Apple user, I see no reason not to do so.
