JAN SUMMER

-

1944-2021

On June 25, 2021, Eva Janice Summer passed away after a long illness at her home in Houston, Texas.

Jan was born February 13, 1944 in Cherryville, North Carolina to Carlyle and Eva Summer. She graduated from Wake Forest University followed by achieving her law degree from the University of Texas, with Honors, in 1976.

The majority of Jan’s professional life was spent in public service, capped by becoming the founding director of The Center for Dispute Resolution at the University of Texas Law School, in 1993.

After retirement in 2010 Jan pursued her love of ceramics, gifting many with her beautiful creations.

An inspiring friend, brilliant lawyer, innovative builder, avid birder, global traveler, creative force, loyal family member and loving partner, Jan lived fully and well.

She leaves three brothers of Cherryville, North Carolina: Larry, Garry and Oren Summer and their wives; nieces and nephews, two godsons, and many dear friends and her loving wife, Kay Little of Houston, Texas.

We wish to express our gratitude to Pin Oak Caregivers, who sent Remi, Oby, Trevana and Elizabeth to care tenderly for Jan as Alzheimer’s took her voice and physical agility. Hospice Plus provided her compassionate nurses, Shon and Marion.

Memorial contributions in Jan’s memory may be made to: Ann Richards School for Girls, Travis Audubon/Chaetura Canyon, Penland School of Crafts, or a charity of your choosing.

A Celebration of Jan’s life has been planned in both Houston and Austin.

Friday, July 30, 2021 at 5:00 pm in The Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas.

Tuesday, September 14th at 3:00 pm at Chez Zee Gallery, 5406 Balcones Drive Austin, Texas 78731.
