One young man was shot and another was stabbed during a fight over a gun in a Houston Community College parking lot, police said.

Officers responded to the incident about 12:20 p.m. at 8000 Fulton St. on the college’s Northline campus and found one man, in his mid-20s, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, while another had cuts and stab wounds to his body, Assistant Police Chief Ban Tien told KTRK.

The gunshot victim was in surgery at Ben Taub Hospital, Tien said. The stabbing victim was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Both were in stable condition.

Police said four people got into an altercation inside a vehicle in the parking lot, which evolved into a struggle over a gun. One person eventually grabbed hold of the firearm and shot another person in the vehicle.

It was not immediately clear how the other wounded person was stabbed.

One person of interest was arrested shortly after the incident, when a nearby community member called the police department’s tip line. The fourth person involved was still at large, Tien said Saturday afternoon.

The weapon and some narcotics were found at the scene, authorities said.

Police initially reported there was a double shooting at the scene.

The HCC Northline campus was closed Saturday afternoon as police investigated the scene. Tien noted the good fortune that the incident happened on a weekend, when the college’s campus was relatively empty.

“We are extremely fortunate today that because of the weekend, the amount of students here is minimal and the damage is minimized,” Tien said. “There are some places that should be safe here, and an institution of higher learning is definitely one of them.”
