BYROM THEODORE WEHNER
1918-2021
Byrom Theodore Wehner, 103, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 26, 2021 at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, TX. Byrom was born March 21, 1918 in Del Rio, TX to Frederick William Henry Wehner and Huldah Severine Thorgeson Wehner. Byrom was an assisted-living resident of Clarewood House in Houston. He formerly resided in northern Waller County and earlier in Houston.
Byrom’s father was a German immigrant to Berwick, LA, where he met his mother, the daughter of Theodore Andreas Thorgeson, a Norwegian immigrant, and Annie Arvilla Byrom, a native of West Columbia, TX. Byrom was a descendant of John Smith Davenport Byrom, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and of Virginia patriots who fought for the freedom of the American colonies in the Revolutionary War.
Byrom attended public schools in Del Rio. He went on to graduate from Texas A&M (Class of 1939), with a BS degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of the Texas Aggie Band, and served as band commander in his senior year.
On September 1, 1940 at First Methodist Church in Del Rio, Byrom married the cherished love of his life, Anna Bess Ratliff. Bess preceded him in death on January 24, 2016 after 75 years of marriage.
Byrom honorably served his country in World War II as an Army officer. He was called to active duty in the fall of 1941, and stationed first at Fort
Sam Houston, TX and then at the Rock Island Arsenal, IL. He left active duty as a major at the end of 1945, and served several years in the Army Reserve.
Byrom was retired from the National Supply Division of Armco Steel and previously worked for Mission Manufacturing Company. After retirement, he was a consultant for several years. He held several patents for seals used in oil field equipment.
Byrom had no current church affiliation, but was a long-time Methodist. He was previously a member of First Methodist Houston and of First Methodist Church of Hempstead, TX.
Byrom was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bess, infant son Jeffrey
Kyle Wehner, his parents, daughter-in-law Nancy B. Wehner, and son-in-law Michael Wilkens. He is survived by son Byrom Thorgeson Wehner and daughter Sharon Wehner Wilkens, Houston; grandson Charles H. Wehner, Fredericksburg, TX; granddaughters Susan W. Davidson, Algoa, TX and AnneMarie Wilkens, Houston; great-granddaughters Kaitlyn Hughes and Dakota Shrader, Algoa; Amanda Lawson, Livingston, TX and Kylie and Cadence Portillo, Houston; great-great-grandsons
Tylor and Kaiden Lawson, Livingston; several nieces and nephews; and other family members.
