Have a good attitude during a job search

Q: What can I do to find a job faster? I have been searching lately, looking at every opportunit­y that seems interestin­g. I keep trying all the things that have worked for me in the past and can’t seem to get a break on landing a job offer. I know I can’t make someone hire me, but what can I do to speed things up?

A: Landing a new job involves using the right techniques combined with a good attitude. You cannot have one without the other, and both create a synergisti­c process that makes everything work.

Understand­ing what employers are looking for and using the latest job-search techniques are crucial in generating attention. But once you get noticed, a good attitude is hard to beat, and hiring managers can sense when you have one.

Most job seekers can identify with your comment on wanting to speed the hiring process up. The reality with job searching is that you can only control your actions with seeking employment.

A productive and successful job search often sounds like this, “No, no, no, no, no, and yes.”

You will get a lot of no answers before you get to the job offer, so it is crucial to keep things in perspectiv­e and protect your confidence by being realistic about rejection.

A good attitude can make up for skilled areas where you might not be as strong. For sure there are required skills for some positions, but a good attitude in wanting to make the employer successful goes a long way.

It is only human to experience the ups and downs of a job search, and the uncertaint­y of job searching can impact the way you feel about yourself, especially if you have faced rejection several times in a row.

You can take some steps to change your outlook, such as trying new things and getting out of your comfort zone. It can be easy to settle down behind a screen and keypad your way to finding employment; however, if that were all you needed to land a job, there would be no need to network with people or think outside the box.
