Ohtani, Barria lead Angels’ win

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani ended a long run drought with an RBI double, Jaime Barria outdueled Cole Irvin, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 1-0 on Saturday.

The Japanese two-way sensation lined a double to right-center in the third that drove in Matt Thaiss and ended the Angels’ string of 29 scoreless innings against the Athletics. It was Ohtani’s 82nd RBI of the season, which is one the major league lead.

Barria pitched 62⁄3 innings and retired 10 straight. RAYS 9, RED SOX 5: Wander Franco had two key run-scoring hits, and the Tampa Bay bullpen worked out of a pair of bases-loaded jams, helping the team move into first place in the AL East with a victory at home. Before the game, Tampa Bay learned that ace Tyler Glasnow is expecting to get a recommenda­tion from doctors next week to have Tommy John surgery.

METS 5, REDS 4 (10): Joey Votto came oh-so-close to matching the record with a home run in eight consecutiv­e games, but Javier Baez did clear the fence in his New York debut, helping rally past visiting Cincinnati.

YANKEES 4, MARLINS 2: Anthony Rizzo homered in his second consecutiv­e game since joining New York, leading a win at Miami.

BLUE JAYS 4, ROYALS 0: George Springer hit two home runs, Alek Manoah pitched seven dominant innings, and Toronto beat visiting Kansas City.

ORIOLES 5, TIGERS 2: John Means struck out six in six strong innings, Maikel Franco homered, and Baltimore won at Detroit.

TWINS 8, CARDINALS 1: Ryan Jeffers hit a three-run homer, and Minnesota beat host St. Louis to end a threegame losing streak.

CUBS 6, NATIONALS 3: Kyle Hendricks earned his major league-leading 13th victory, Rafael Ortega homered, and Chicago won at Washington.

PIRATES 3, PHILLIES 2: Jacob Stallings drove in the winning run with a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning, lifting Pittsburgh past visiting Philadelph­ia.

RANGERS 5, MARINERS 4 (10): Jonah Heim hit his second two-run homer of the game in the 10th inning to lift host Texas past Seattle.

BRAVES 8, BREWERS 1: Dansby Swanson hit a grand slam and a two-run shot and drove in a career-high seven runs to lead Atlanta to a win at home. Milwaukee pitchers Jake Cousins and Hunter Strickland tested positive for COVID-19 and will be placed in quarantine.

DODGERS 8, DIAMONDBAC­KS 3: Justin Turner hit a go-ahead, two-run homer, Albert Pujols had a pair of RBI singles, and Los Angeles beat host Arizona.

ROCKIES 5, PADRES 3: German Marquez outdueled Yu Darvish and hit a 418-foot home run off his fellow All-Star to lead Colorado to a win at San Diego, which placed star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a partially dislocated left shoulder.
