Community colleges to host fifth annual Women in Industry Conference
More than 1,250 women are expected to fill Galveston’s Moody Gardens Convention Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, to learn about expanding opportunities for women in the petrochemical industry and industrial trades.
The one-day Women in Industry Conference will introduce women to careers and opportunities available in the petrochemical industry and industrial trades, career fields long dominated by men but now open to women.
This marks the conference’s fifth year hosted by Galveston College and a consortium of community colleges from the Texas Gulf Coast region.
The 2019 Women in Industry Conference, the fourth hosted by CCPI, drew more than 1,200 interested women. The 2020 conference was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This conference is designed for all women — the unemployed or underemployed, high school or college students, veterans, and women in transition — who desire a stable, well-paying career,” said Cissy Matthews, vice president of instruction at Galveston College. “Because of an aging workforce, plant expansions, and new construction starts in a growing economy, women in the Gulf Coast region have more opportunities than ever before.”
Attendees at previous conferences also included women already in the field, looking to advance in their career paths.
Participants will hear from other women who work in the petrochemical industry and industrial trades and will have the opportunity to talk with college representatives about enrollment, financial aid, and other training-related issues. Several major employers are also expected to be present.
