Eviction ban offers relief as school year nears

-

Days after a federal moratorium on evictions expired, more than a thousand Houstonians on Tuesday lined up outside a union hall where local officials and nonprofit organizations helped residents apply for rental assistance and emergency funds. The Harris County Recovery Assistance program will give $1,500 to 20,000 people. Many also applied for the Houston-Harris County Emergency Rental Assistance Program, which pays overdue rent to landlords. Still, hundreds were evicted in that brief window before the ban.

Meanwhile, anxiety overwhelms parents as schools get little guidance on how to proceed amid Gov. Greg Abbott’s ban on mask mandates. Some parents have petitioned for a reversal.
