2 women killed in collision with wrong-way truck

- From staff and wire reports

Two women were killed early Saturday by a truck that crashed into them while it was going the wrong way at a high speed on Interstate 35 in San Antonio, police said.

The two women died on impact, police said. Arriving officers found the truck upside down and on fire. One officer pulled the driver to safety while others attempted to fight the fire with extinguishers.

The San Antonio Police Department received several 911 calls about the truck, a Ford F350 initially traveling the wrong way on Interstate 37 before entering I-35, still going north in the southbound lanes.

The truck, reaching speeds of about 90 mph, was followed by police using the SAPD Eagle helicopter. The truck crashed into a Nissan Rogue on the interstate between Eisenhauer Road and Walzem Road.

Police did not name the truck’s driver, 58, who was taken to a hospital. He faces two counts of intoxication manslaughter, police said.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to identify the women who died in the crash.
