WAVA LEE FICK (CADDENHEAD)

Wava Lee (Caddenhead) Fick was born on November 16, 1929, in DeKalb, Texas and passed away on August 8, 2021 in Houston, Texas. She grew up in New Boston, Bowie County, Texas. Her parents were Luther Harvey Caddenhead and Zula Marie Qualls. Wava graduated from New Boston High School in 1947 and then attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonvil­le, Texas, where she met the love of her life, Carl Leroy Fick. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1954 with a degree in English.

In 1956 the family moved to Houston, where Carl spent his career with Brown & Root and Wava devoted most of her years to rearing their seven children. Wava later worked as the Houston Southwest District Secretary for the United Methodist Church for 13 years, retiring in 1993.

Wava’s husband, Carl, predecease­d her in 2017 after 64 years of marriage.

She is survived by her seven children: Dale Campbell (Ted), Gloria Williams (Olin), Melissa Kamerbeek (Marty), Carl Milton Fick (Diane), Leah Tzimouraka­s (Kostas), Jana McVey (Glenn), and Randall Fick (Divya), plus 22 grandchild­ren and three great-grandchild­ren.

Wava and family were members of Beneke United Methodist Church (UMC), and later Westbury UMC, where she was a member for 58 years and served in many leadership roles at the church, including the delivery of fresh homemade bread to every first-time visitor for 30+ years. She was honored as a Lon Morris College “Distinguis­hed Alumni” in 1994.

Wava’s great passions were her Lord, her family, and her church. She loved to cook, read, work crossword puzzles, and write poetry. Wava was a wonderful mother, who ran a busy household. She was an exceptiona­l cook, who was dearly loved by her family and friends.

Wava’s burial service was held August 11, 2021 at Forest Park Cemetery in Houston. The family is grateful to

Carol Long, and her daughter Kadisha, for providing loving, in-home care to Wava for the last 3½ years.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, 13213 Southwest Fwy, Sugar Land, TX 77478 at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 21. Memorial gifts may be donated to Wava’s childhood church: Tapp United Methodist Church, 715 S. McCoy Blvd. New Boston, TX 75570.
