Skid extends to 12 with first home defeat

The Dynamo hoped a return to their home field would heal some wounds. Instead, the bleeding got worse, and now they may need a tourniquet.

Houston conceded twice in the second half en route to a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids at BBVA Stadium, marking the first time the Dynamo has lost at home this season.

The bigger problem, however, is that now the Dynamo (3-7-9, 18 points) have gone 12 games without winning (0-5-7), extending their franchise record. Their last win was on May 22.

The Dynamo created plenty of shooting opportunities and registered a whopping 25 shots, with 10 being put on target. Colorado (8-4-4, 31 points) had 15 shots and put six on target.

“I thought in general it was a sloppy game,” coach Tab Ramos said. “Having said that, when you look at the fact that we had somewhere around 25 shots for the game, you would hope that you can score three or four goals instead of just one on a penalty.

“So chances were created. Unfortunately, they weren’t put away. And the final score is what it is.”

The Rapids took it to the Dynamo early and had several set pieces in the Dynamo’s defensive third. They made one count in the fifth minute.

Jack Price served a corner kick to the edge of the 6-yard box, and Lalas Abubakar found a little bit of space to head the ball into the bottom left corner.

It was a startling moment for the Dynamo, who began the game in a rarely used 35-2 formation. Falling behind that early virtually prevented them from getting into their strategy.

Houston’s best moments came in the last 15 minutes of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second half.

After Dynamo defender Maynor Figueroa was fouled in the penalty area, the Dynamo were awarded a penalty. Forward Fafa Picault converted a penalty kick just before halftime to level the score at 1-1.

Houston started well in the second half and appeared to draw another penalty kick in the 53rd minute.

With the ball rolling through the penalty area toward the end line, forward Maxi Urruti got to it just ahead of Colorado goalkeeper William Yarbrough. The referee whistled for a penalty.

After a quick VAR check, however, the penalty was negated because the referee ruled that Urruti was offsides when a pass was played into the box.

The Rapids then took over, and it didn’t take them long to go back in front.

Mark-Anthony Kaye got space in the left side of the penalty area after Dynamo right back Griffin Dorsey left him to chase the ball.

Kaye received a pass and then sent a low cross to forward Michael Barrios for an easy finish and a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute.

When Colorado got another chance, it made it count and put the game away. In the 80th minute, Braian Galvan shot from the right side and beat Dynamo goalkeeper Marko Maric to make it 3-1.
