GHBA Benefit project supported by 84 Lumber
The 41st year of the Greater Houston Builders Association’s Benefit Homes Project fell during the COVID-19 pandemic that is challenging charities globally.
The project is a charity that relies on donated materials, labor and services to build homes in prime communities that sell at market price. The donated construction allows these homes to raise funds through their sale and the funds are donated to two local charities, Operation Finally Home and HomeAid Houston.
Chesmar Homes built their Hillcrest Plan in Lago Mar in early 2021, and one of the major donations came from 84 Lumber Company, a GHBA member. 84 Lumber donated all of the lumber for the rafters (roof ) segment of the home.
Founded in 1956 and headquartered in EightyFour, Pennsylvania, 84 Lumber Company is one of the nation’s largest privately held suppliers of building materials, manufactured components and industryleading services for singleand multi-family residences and commercial buildings. The company operates nearly 250 stores, component manufacturing plants, custom door shops, custom millwork shops and engineered wood product centers in more than 30 states.
“During the time Chesmar was constructing their Benefit home,” said Patrick Mayhan, chairman of the Benefit Homes Project, “lumber and many other construction materials was hard to come-by. 84 Lumber really stepped up and made sure Chesmar had what they needed to build their Benefit home in a timely, profitable manner that would benefit the two charities. We can’t thank them enough for making this happen.”
Each year, two Benefit homes are constructed with donated materials, labor and services. The survey, to construction and even closing costs are donated to ensure funds will help the homeless of Houston and wounded veterans returning from active duty.
