Bravo, superintendent
Regarding “HISD fills teacher vacancies, launches virtual academy for students who need to quarantine” (Aug. 18): Children with cancer are often immunocompromised — making them particularly vulnerable to adverse outcomes, including death, from COVID-19. This is especially true in those patients who are under the age of 12 who are not yet eligible for vaccination. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of HISD Superintendent Millard House II to launch a virtual learning academy for students who must quarantine and for those with a compromised immune system. All children have the right to access safe, quality education. On behalf of Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center at Texas Children’s Hospital, one of the largest in the United States, we are very appreciative of House and the Houston Independent School District for providing an invaluable service to our community’s most vulnerable children.
