BERNICE CAROLYN LEWIS TRAHAN

Bernice Carolyn Lewis Trahan was born on January 6, 1939 to Bernice Lewis and Rosa Lee Duckless in Houston, Texas. She was born the third of four loving sisters Barbara, Jean (Peaches) and Rosemary. She departed August 30, 2021.

She attended Harper Middle School and graduated from Houston’s Booker T. Washington High School. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Southern University and taught elementary school in the Houston Independen­t School District for 27 years. With brief assignment­s at Dodson Elementary and Golfcrest Elementary schools, she spent the major portion of her tenure teaching at Lantrip Elementary School in Houston’s East End where along with teaching fourth grade and language arts, she served as the school’s black history chairperso­n for many years.

In June of 1962, she married Patrick Trahan at St.

Monica’s Catholic Church. To their union, four children were born, Patrick, Jr. (Jackie), Timothy (Janice), Joseph (Amy) and Bethany. She leaves behind eight grandchild­ren.

Bernice was an active member of her cherished church community of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church where she served on the parish council, finance council, bazaar committee and sunshine committee.

She was preceded in death by her father Bernice, mother Rosa Lee, husband Patrick and sister Barbara. She leaves behind two beloved sisters, four children and a numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
