Henry Buck Garcia, age 78, went to be with the Lord on August 27, 2021 in San Antonio, TX. Henry was born on July 26, 1943 in Houston, TX to parents Arthur Garcia and Margaret Orta. Henry was a four-year letter winner for the Texas State Bobcat basketball team from 1963-1966. He led the Bobcats in scoring in both his junior and senior years. Before his junior season, Garcia was selected by the United States Department of State to represent the United States in a Goodwill tour traveling around the West Indies and South America, playing a total of 21 games. Garcia graduated from Texas State in 1966 and began a successful teaching and coaching career in various districts across Texas including San Antonio, Eagle Pass, Harlandale and Houston until he retired in 2004. During his career, Garcia was involved with numerous volunteer efforts including AAU youth basketball teams, Little Spurs League, officiating for youth leagues and volunteer coaching of high school players during summer leagues. Garcia was recruited to coach professional basketball in Mexico from 2006-2010, coaching in Zacatecas, Queretaro and Cuidad Victoria. Garcia was inducted into the
International Hall of Fame for Basketball in Laredo in 1980. In 2001, he was also inducted into the National Hispanic Hall of Fame in San Antonio. In 2016, Garcia was inducted into the Texas State Hall of Honor in San Marcos.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Margaret Garcia. Henry is survived by his children, Matthew Garcia (Elizabeth Shapiro) and daughter, Jaclyn Flory (Travis); his sisters, Emily Garcia, Gracie Garcia, Candace Martinez, and Eunice Ayarzagoitia (Pedro); the mother of his children, Greta Garcia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
