WHEN THE JAGUARS PASS

-

The Texans and the rest of the NFL get their first look at Trevor Lawrence, the first overall pick in the draft. He had a 106.5 rating in preseason and didn’t throw an interception. He likes to throw from the pocket, but he’s mobile enough to throw on the run, too. He has the size (6-6, 220) and the strength to get away from sacks. He’s got a terrific arm and a great sense of timing. The coaches don’t want him to throw too much because they don’t want pass rushers like Charles Omenihu, Jacob Martin, DeMarcus Walker and Whitney Mercilus abandoning the run and teeing off on him. Lawrence is blessed with three good receivers who have excellent size — Laviska Shenault (6-1), DJ Chark (6-4) and Marvin Jones Jr. (6-2). Shenault had 58 catches and five touchdowns as a rookie. Chark had 53 receptions and five touchdowns. Last season with Detroit, Jones produced 76 catches for nine touchdowns.

The Texans’ defense that was awful last season has undergone a massive transformation in scheme and personnel. If they can’t stop the run and pressure Lawrence, the secondary could get torched. The defense needs to continue the trend it started in preseason by forcing turnovers to shorten the field for the offense.
