The 2021 list: High-demand tech jobs
Across the nation companies are vying for the best and brightest technical talent, according to Robert Half Technology’s 2021 IT salary report. The report said that the jobs will be impacted by a number of variables such as starting salary, competition, location, corporate culture, and budgets.
Here are Robert Half ’s picks:
• Cloud architects. Supervise an organization’s cloud computing strategy. They’re also responsible for deploying, managing, and supporting cloud applications. Most have a strong understanding of multiple operating systems in addition to networking, programming, and security skills. Companies look for candidates with a strong knowledge of cloud services such as Amazon Web Services, as well as experience with IT Service Management (ITSM), Infrastructure & Operations (I&O), governance, automation, and vendor management. Additionally, collaboration and communication skills and experience with scaling cloud applications are sought after.
• Database administrators (DBAs). Responsible for maintaining software used to manage a database and ensuring the data is easily accessible. DBAs ensure that servers remain efficient and operational while supervising data security, implementation, replication, backup, storage and access. Companies look for candidates who can not only monitor their servers, but who will also be able to optimize performance and be on call in emergencies. The essential requirements are bachelor’s degree in CS or an associate degree in database administration; background in IT work or database administration and Oracle, Linux, and SQL skills.
• Programmer analysts . Responsible for designing, coding, and testing new programs along with providing detailed documentation of the process using flowcharts and diagrams. These IT pros design programs based on client requirements and determine how much it will cost to build. They also handle debugging and troubleshooting information systems and application programs.
Skills needed: Systems analysis and computer programming; bachelor’s degree in computer science; information technology or related field.
• Systems analysts.
By analyzing IT systems in an organization systems analysts design techniques to help solve business problems. They’re responsible for investigating issues and solving problems efficiently and cost-effectively. Companies look for candidates who can think creatively and who have strong communication and problem-solving skills. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT, engineering, or IS; analytical and problemsolving skills; and experience with business and technical analysis, and project management.
• Mobile application developers. Building mobile applications requires extensive knowledge of the various mobile platforms in use and, how to develop applications that will work on Android, iOS, Windows, and other popular operating systems. You’ll need experience in programming, UX design, troubleshooting and debugging programs, and development. Additionally, companies look for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in CS or relevant field; experience in mobile development; analytical and problem-solving skills; and knowledge of iOS, Android, Objective C, HTML, XML and JavaScript.
• Network administrators. Network administrators are responsible for handling LAN/WAN protocol, software, and hardware. Companies look for problem solvers because the position involves extensive troubleshooting. Requirements: Communication skills; analytic and diagnostic skills; willingness to be on call 24-7 in case of emergencies; and professional certifications.
• Software developers . Responsible for designing, developing, installing, testing, and maintaining software systems. Developers code, design, and build applications, websites, or mobile apps. They must have a working knowledge of multiple programming languages such as C#, C++, HTML, Java, Microsoft .NET, and SQL Server. They must also understand client requirements and be able to provide recommendations for improving web, software, and mobile applications. Companies also require strong communication skills, a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a two-year associate degree with certifications, boot camps, and prior work experience.
• DevOps engineers. DevOps best practices encourage faster code deployment with fewer deployment failures. Many companies are hiring engineers with DevOps experience to oversee coding, scripting, and processes development. They also manage IT infrastructure, provision resources, oversee software testing, and monitor performance after software is released. In short, their job is to simplify code updates, which enables companies to tweak and improve processes in the organization for maximum efficiency. Requirements: Coding and scripting skills; automation; data management; and IT operations skills; and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Help desk and desktop support professionals. The help desk is a critical part of running an efficient business. It’s the first line of defense for customer service and troubleshooting. Help desk workers need the right mix of technical and soft skills. Half breaks out the role of help desk technician into three tiers because the job description and requirements can vary significantly based on the business. Requirements for Tier 1: Entry-level positions require less than two years of experience, an associates degree, or coursework at a technical school. Tier 2 requires two to four years of experience, a two-year or bachelor’s degree, and relevant work experience. Tier 3 requires four or more years of experience in a help desk setting, bachelor’s degree in a related field, and professional certifications.
