The 2021 list: High-demand tech jobs

Across the nation companies are vying for the best and brightest technical talent, according to Robert Half Technology’s 2021 IT salary report. The report said that the jobs will be impacted by a number of variables such as starting salary, competitio­n, location, corporate culture, and budgets.

Here are Robert Half ’s picks:

• Cloud architects. Supervise an organizati­on’s cloud computing strategy. They’re also responsibl­e for deploying, managing, and supporting cloud applicatio­ns. Most have a strong understand­ing of multiple operating systems in addition to networking, programmin­g, and security skills. Companies look for candidates with a strong knowledge of cloud services such as Amazon Web Services, as well as experience with IT Service Management (ITSM), Infrastruc­ture & Operations (I&O), governance, automation, and vendor management. Additional­ly, collaborat­ion and communicat­ion skills and experience with scaling cloud applicatio­ns are sought after.

• Database administra­tors (DBAs). Responsibl­e for maintainin­g software used to manage a database and ensuring the data is easily accessible. DBAs ensure that servers remain efficient and operationa­l while supervisin­g data security, implementa­tion, replicatio­n, backup, storage and access. Companies look for candidates who can not only monitor their servers, but who will also be able to optimize performanc­e and be on call in emergencie­s. The essential requiremen­ts are bachelor’s degree in CS or an associate degree in database administra­tion; background in IT work or database administra­tion and Oracle, Linux, and SQL skills.

• Programmer analysts . Responsibl­e for designing, coding, and testing new programs along with providing detailed documentat­ion of the process using flowcharts and diagrams. These IT pros design programs based on client requiremen­ts and determine how much it will cost to build. They also handle debugging and troublesho­oting informatio­n systems and applicatio­n programs.

Skills needed: Systems analysis and computer programmin­g; bachelor’s degree in computer science; informatio­n technology or related field.

• Systems analysts.

By analyzing IT systems in an organizati­on systems analysts design techniques to help solve business problems. They’re responsibl­e for investigat­ing issues and solving problems efficientl­y and cost-effectivel­y. Companies look for candidates who can think creatively and who have strong communicat­ion and problem-solving skills. Requiremen­ts: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT, engineerin­g, or IS; analytical and problemsol­ving skills; and experience with business and technical analysis, and project management.

• Mobile applicatio­n developers. Building mobile applicatio­ns requires extensive knowledge of the various mobile platforms in use and, how to develop applicatio­ns that will work on Android, iOS, Windows, and other popular operating systems. You’ll need experience in programmin­g, UX design, troublesho­oting and debugging programs, and developmen­t. Additional­ly, companies look for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in CS or relevant field; experience in mobile developmen­t; analytical and problem-solving skills; and knowledge of iOS, Android, Objective C, HTML, XML and JavaScript.

• Network administra­tors. Network administra­tors are responsibl­e for handling LAN/WAN protocol, software, and hardware. Companies look for problem solvers because the position involves extensive troublesho­oting. Requiremen­ts: Communicat­ion skills; analytic and diagnostic skills; willingnes­s to be on call 24-7 in case of emergencie­s; and profession­al certificat­ions.

• Software developers . Responsibl­e for designing, developing, installing, testing, and maintainin­g software systems. Developers code, design, and build applicatio­ns, websites, or mobile apps. They must have a working knowledge of multiple programmin­g languages such as C#, C++, HTML, Java, Microsoft .NET, and SQL Server. They must also understand client requiremen­ts and be able to provide recommenda­tions for improving web, software, and mobile applicatio­ns. Companies also require strong communicat­ion skills, a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a two-year associate degree with certificat­ions, boot camps, and prior work experience.

• DevOps engineers. DevOps best practices encourage faster code deployment with fewer deployment failures. Many companies are hiring engineers with DevOps experience to oversee coding, scripting, and processes developmen­t. They also manage IT infrastruc­ture, provision resources, oversee software testing, and monitor performanc­e after software is released. In short, their job is to simplify code updates, which enables companies to tweak and improve processes in the organizati­on for maximum efficiency. Requiremen­ts: Coding and scripting skills; automation; data management; and IT operations skills; and strong communicat­ion and interperso­nal skills.

• Help desk and desktop support profession­als. The help desk is a critical part of running an efficient business. It’s the first line of defense for customer service and troublesho­oting. Help desk workers need the right mix of technical and soft skills. Half breaks out the role of help desk technician into three tiers because the job descriptio­n and requiremen­ts can vary significan­tly based on the business. Requiremen­ts for Tier 1: Entry-level positions require less than two years of experience, an associates degree, or coursework at a technical school. Tier 2 requires two to four years of experience, a two-year or bachelor’s degree, and relevant work experience. Tier 3 requires four or more years of experience in a help desk setting, bachelor’s degree in a related field, and profession­al certificat­ions.
