- By Jan Burns FREELANCE WRITER

Americans age 65 or older have a myriad of choices to make when it comes to a huge “next step” in their health care — Medicare. Following are basic important questions about coverages and detailed setup process for those who are new to Medicare.

6 Q: When you are eligible, how do you get started?

& First, you are eligible to sign up for Medicare three months before you turn 65, and the period continues to three months after you turn 65.

You will need to create an account at www.mymedicare.gov by clicking on “Create an Account,” and following further instructions. There you will find information about how to proceed if you are retired or still working.

Each person will then make decisions based on their health care situation as well as budget.

The Medicare Plan Finder tool (medicare.gov/plan-compare) is a way to navigate options to match your needs. Each year it’s important to review Medicare health and drug coverages and make changes if they no longer meet your needs, or to see if you can lower your out-of-pocket

costs and save money.
