FIVE THINGS TO WATCH Can the Rockets bring the same defensive intensity after a blowout win, played with the added fuel of the home-opener emotions, as they showed coming off a blowout loss?
1
As much as the Rockets were aided by Oklahoma City’s poor shooting, the Rockets were much more active and disruptive in their second game, making it more difficult for the Thunder to executive offensively, much as the Timberwolves had done to the Rockets on Wednesday. The Rockets, however, were driven by a determination to bounce back from a letdown loss to open the season — feelings they won’t have Sunday.
Does Kevin Porter Jr. run the Rockets’ offense as effectively as he did against OKC?
2
The Rockets young point guard went from nine turnovers in the opener to committing just two while scoring 18 points with 10 assists in the second game. The matchup with Boston’s Marcus Smart, however, will bring a much tougher test. In two games against the Celtics last season, Porter made 7 of 23 shots with 15 assists and seven turnovers.
Hello again.
3
While Rockets center Daniel Theis goes against his former team — he made 3 of 9 shots in each of his two games against the Celtics after last season’s trade to the Bulls — Rockets rookie Alperen Sengun could get time against Enes Kanter in a matchup of two of the five Turkish players in the NBA. Kanter played just five minutes for the Celtics this season. The matchup also includes Spanish national team teammates Usman Garuba and Juancho Hernangomez, fellow Aggies Danuel House Jr. and Robert Williams and German countrymen Theis and Dennis Schroder.
Can Christian Wood keep it up?
4
Wood was sensational in the season’s second game, scoring 31 points, one shy of his career high, with 14 rebounds, four made 3s and three blocked shots, the 12th time an NBA player reached those numbers in league history.
Who are these guys?
5
The Celtics’ offense crashed in the second game. Jaylen Brown, who scored a Boston opening-night record 46 points, his career high, made just 3 of 13 shots, scoring nine points Friday. Marcus Smart went from scoring 15 points with eight rebounds to going scoreless with six missed shots and no rebounds against the Raptors. The likelihood is that the second game, rather than the first, was the aberration.
