HOWARD HSIAO LIAN CHEN
1934-2021
Howard Hsiao Lian Chen, of Dallas, Texas, went home to be with the Lord, His Savior, on December 30, 2021 at 4:30am. He was surrounded by his daughter, son-in-law, and two granddaughters, holding him and praying over him as he waltzed into heaven to his favorite song, Edelweiss, until Jesus took his other hand.
Howard was born in Fujian Province, China on November 24, 1934. Surviving wartime with 14 siblings, he immigrated alone from Hong Kong to the US at 22 years old with only $200 in his pocket. He graduated with a BBA at the University of Houston to start a better life for his future family, eventually impacting 46 relatives in 4 generations after him.
He began earning a humble living selling Hong Kong imports, then transitioned to selling insurance before his successful business in commercial real estate for nearly 50 years in Houston, Texas, driven by his vigorous work ethic, honorable character, sharp business mind, quick thinking, and ability to cultivate meaningful relationships. He earned a solid reputation of integrity and wisdom, well-respected and admired by his colleagues and friends. He was known for seeking to apply biblical principles in business dealings and in life. He found joy in teaching wisdom and mentoring others, and many have been the beneficiary of Howard’s generous nature, enjoying his gift of wit while he spoke fluently in English and 3 dialects of Chinese. An entrepreneur at heart, he was always open to new ideas and opportunities, and was an exceptional problem solver and financier as well. Howard was an avid hunter, excellent marksman, business advisor, and yet a graceful, gentleman ballroom dancer with his beloved wife, Kay, of 61 years. He was a loving son, husband, father, father in law, grandfather, son-inlaw, brother, and uncle as his devotion to his family was deeply heartfelt.
All whose lives he touched, will miss him greatly. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Kay, daughter, Irene Tang, sonin-law, Dr. Erwin Tang, two granddaughters, Christine and Carolyn Tang, sister Shu Chin Chan, nephews: Eddie Chen, Albert Lui, Andy Lui and Morris Chen, nieces: Boo Cheng, Wendy Hou, Vivian Underwood, Diana Keitz, Ellen Kinney, seven half-brothers and sisters in Taiwan, and many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Howard received Jesus Christ as his Savior as a teen, rededicated his life at age 67 at Second Baptist Church of Woodway in Houston, and maintained a close relationship with the Lord, able to memorize scripture readily with an eagerness to share the gospel given the opportunity. He was a member of Prestonwood Baptist Church after moving to Dallas in 2008.
His life was a cherished blessing, his memory a treasure, and his spirit loved beyond words. Our family is deeply grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love, support and prayers, and your presence in celebrating Howard’s life. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our pastors, relatives, friends and caregivers as we praise our gracious Lord and Savior for blessing him with a rich life of 88 years with us here on earth, and now the assurance of an even richer life of Glory with eternity in Heaven.
