Follow 7 tips for hiring reliable heating or plumbing company
Now is the time to prepare for cold weather. This winter season in the greater Houston area has been unseasonably warm, but as evidenced with last year’s surprising freeze, the forecast could change at any time.
During colder temperatures, the last thing you need is a faulty heating system, frozen pipes, or a damaged home with scammers trying to cheat you out of money. For instance, if a pipe bursts, immediate attention by a plumber is crucial. A plumber can help you locate the problem, thaw out your pipes, and insulate against future freezing. Repairing a pipe can be tricky and may end up causing more problems, so hiring a plumber is a safe and smart option.
The Better Business Bureau of Greater Houston and South Texas offers the following tips on hiring a heating or plumbing company: • Do your research.
Research several businesses to learn about their background and qualifications. Some may be better qualified than others depending on their work history and your heating or plumbing system. BBB Business Profiles, available at BBBHouston.org, will give you a background on the business, including any complaints and customer reviews. Compare bids for pricing and job scope.
• Be sure the business is properly
licensed to perform the work. Visit the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation at www.tdlr.texas.gov to locate heating contractors and the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners at www.tsbpe.texas.gov to find plumbers.
• Get everything in writing. When contracting a job, even an emergency service, make sure everything the business agrees to is put in writing. Make sure the cost is within your budget and that any verbal promises are also documented in writing. Read the contract thoroughly and get any questions answered before signing.
• Understand the warranty. If the business offers a warranty on the work, make sure you understand what is covered and how long it will be covered. • Consult your insurance company.
You want to check your insurance policy to see what’s covered and make adjustments accordingly. Ask about your policy coverage and specific filing requirements. Your insurance company may also have recommended contractors if something happens.
• Know your rights. Check your local and state statutes regarding natural disaster assistance and temporary contractors. In some locations, like Texas, it’s against the law for a contractor to offer to waive an insurance deductible or work the deductible amount into a bid.
• Watch for scammers. Storm chasers are illegitimate contractors that travel to areas recently affected by severe weather and go door-to-door offering their services, then disappear after accepting your money. Avoid hiring anyone that uses high-pressure sales tactics, such as “today only” offers, or demands full payment up front.
