URSHULA SUSAN AIKEN

1937-2022

-

Urshula Susan Aiken, also lovingly known as “Nina”, “Susie” or “Sue” passed peacefully January 6, 2022. She was born to Antonio and Irene Jurewicz on March 15, 1937 in Logan County, West Virginia. After her children were grown, Susie moved from Lexington, Kentucky to Houston where much of her family lived. She loved the Houston Astros, the company of family pets, and her community. She made friends wherever she went, touching the hearts of everyone who met her. Proud of her humble upbringing in West Virginia, she enjoyed recounting those memories with her family.

Susie worked tirelessly when helping others in need. Even before her move to Houston, she would travel from Kentucky each Fall to work at the St. Joseph Catholic Church’s Multi-Ethnic

Fun ‘N Food Festival to raise money for Houston’s 6th Ward parish, selflessly giving all of her effort and energy. She volunteered her time after Hurricane Katrina to help with the immense relief efforts. She had a heart of gold for the homeless, children and animals and to the very end, always thought of others less fortunate than she.

Nina was also always ready to give a warm, motherly hug, the kind you get from your favorite relative you seldom saw. Her loving, nurturing side never wanted you to go hungry and she frequently showed her love for others through her passion for cooking. Nearing the end of her life, Nina showed grace when faced with her greatest challenge, and even in her toughest times, she was able to see the good in situations. She was appreciative of the smallest of gestures, from caretakers and visitors alike, and most certainly one of the last phrases she ever spoke in her life was “Thank you”.

She will be missed terribly.

Susan was preceded in death by her sister Catherine and her infant daughter Susan. She is survived by her brothers Jimmy and Eddie “Tony” Jurewicz, sons Louis (Aurora), Tony and Andy (Cindy) Aiken, daughter Julie Aiken, and grandchildren Kevin Aiken and Tressa Cornell.

An intimate ceremony will be celebrated by family and friends at a future date. In the spirit of Nina’s generous nature, the family asks that donations be made in lieu of flowers to any of the following organizations: https://www.asrs.org/foundation/donate-now, https:// www.nami.org/About-NAMI, https://www.depelchin. org/donate/, https://www. lolasluckyday.com/
