Donald James LaVar, wonderful husband and caring father, was born on 11/1/1946 in New Rochelle, NY. He departed to be with Christ on October 17, 2021 after attempting to overcome the effects of COVID 19. He was the youngest of seven children born to Thomas and Mildred LaVar. His mother passed when he was only 2 years old which led to a difficult childhood. He was encouraged and supported by the Beville family, his brother Tommie and his wife Betty, his foster brothers and sisters and his high school football coach.

He attended Valhalla High School where he was the leading scorer in football for Westcheste­r county in both his junior and senior years. He lettered in football both years. He also lettered in basketball and track where he was one of the school’s leading hurdlers.

Following high school he worked for the telephone company and later moved to Florida as a telephone installer.

He realized his passion as he worked in the field of addiction treatment for 15 years. He married Brenda Wilkins LaVar in 2000. He was a founding member of the Family Christian Center now Harvest Church in Margate. He retired in 2011 when the couple moved to Houston, TX. He attended Fallbrook Church and was a beloved member of the community.

Throughout his travels he never lost touch with his core group of friends, a number with whom he remained close friends until his death. He dearly loved the extended LaVar family and called often to encourage each one.

He is survived by his wife Brenda, his beloved daughter Gena (Byron), sons Omar and Philip (Tracey) as well his grandchild­ren Zeven, Zoe, Mackenzie and Reese. He is also survived by his sister-inlaw Betty LaVar, his nephew Jeffery (Hazella) and nieces Ellen, Kim, Stacey as well Vicky Magee and a host of nieces and nephews.
