MARY HANCOCK BUXTON CAIN
The Trustees, Officers, Staff and Volunteers of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,
Mourn the passing of Mary Hancock Buxton Cain, a vital figure in the Museum’s history, from her service as a docent to her leadership role as Administrative Director and Curator from 1968 to 1970, between the tenures of James Johnson Sweeney and Philippe de Montebello. Chief among her achievements was the 1969 Louise Nevelson retrospective, which prompted the artist to state: “This is the most perfect exhibition installation my works have ever had.”
