Q: I have been planning on looking for a new job for a while. My current job keeps me busy, and it isn’t easy to find time to search for a new one outside of sending applications at night. I am not sure how to begin a job search and would appreciate any recommendations to move toward my career goals.

A: If you have been dreaming of a new job, now is the time to start preparing instead of waiting until next year. Naturally, the goal is not to just land any job rather one that matches your interests and abilities. While sending in applications is a part of the search process, it is not the only option.

The beginning of the new year is often filled with others hoping to land new jobs. Instead of becoming lost in a sea of new candidates, here are some strategies that will help you make faster progress.

• Look ahead. Take the time to identify what you are looking for in a new job and what specific aspects would attract you.

• Break down a job search into blocks. When thinking about a significant change, it can feel overwhelming with the steps you need to take. If you break

your search into blocks, it helps you manage time and see progress. Create a plan of action by having a weekly agenda to follow. A schedule gives you structure and shows where you are making the most progress.

• Take a fresh look at how you present information to

others. When talking with people, are you coming across clearly and concisely? You will find that most people want to help but need your guidance in telling them how.

Do not rely just on your resume instead, create a strong LinkedIn profile, write a biography page, or create a value proposition sheet that lists your accomplishments.

• Technology is a part of job searching and can be a top tool. Using it wisely and consistently will give you a broader reach of connecting with new people.

Start by maintaining your social networking profiles and keep them updated.

Seeking a better job is a noteworthy goal, but developing selfawareness ahead of time will boost your confidence in knowing what you want in your next job. Be aware of the type of work culture that best fits you as well as for potential career growth.

Using these tips will increase your job search effectiveness and pave the way toward more opportunities.

Plus, the knowledge you gather ahead of time will come in handy when connecting with others and accepting offers.
