Seth Davis burst onto the scene as a sophomore running back in 2020, helping Katy win the Class 6A Division II state title alongside his older brother Jalen.

Davis was named the offensive MVP of the championship game and has been on the rise ever since. His junior season saw him break through as the Tigers’ starter under head coach Gary Joseph.

The 5-foot-9, 170-pound ball carrier took advantage of the opportunity, piling up 2,460 yards and 28 touchdowns and averaging 10.2 yards per carry. He went over the century mark in 12 of the Tigers’ 15 games and finished the season as one of the state’s leading rushers after competing in its highest classification.

Davis rushed for nearly 700 yards in the playoffs alone, helping Katy reach the state semifinals. The Tigers ultimately lost to eventual champion Austin Westlake, the No. 2 team in the country.

For his efforts, Davis is the All-Greater Houston Offensive Player of the Year.

He has offers from Florida, Ole Miss, Maryland, Duke and Louisville and should garner even more college interest with another big season as a senior.

Q: Coming into this season as defending state champions, what was the mentality for you and the rest of the players?

Davis: “We just wanted to prove that we belonged, and that it wasn’t a mistake that we won a state championship, and that we were a good team.”

Q: You came up short against a really talented Westlake team. But how would you describe what you guys were able to accomplish?

Davis: “It was a great season, and we all really played well. We had some tough games, but we all really just bounced back. Austin Westlake was a tough one.”

Q: How would you describe the team’s playoff run?

Davis: “It was really fun, and the playoffs are always exciting times. Getting to do it with our seniors one last time was really fun.”

Q: What has it been like playing running back in this offense?

Davis:

“It’s really fun because you get the ball almost every play. You get to make a play all the time, so it’s really good being a running back.”

Q: What is the key to having that success on the ground as a team?

Davis: “We’re a power offense, so no matter what, we’re going to execute. You can know what we’re doing, but we’re going to execute better than what you know and score.”

Q: What were the goals and expectations you had for yourself this season?

Davis:

“I was going to be the starting running back, so I just had to step up for my team and help them out. I also wanted to rush for more yards than last year and score more.”

Q: You shared the backfield with your brother Jalen last year. How has he helped you?

Davis: “He had experience, and I didn’t. So me being behind him actually helped me learn from what he did. That way, I could correct myself on the things I did wrong. He was just a big help.”

Q: You and Dallas Glass make up a nice 1-2 punch in the backfield. How would you describe that dynamic? Davis: “I like having another running back so I don’t have to be in the whole game. He helps me so I can get my breather, and it’s a lot of fun playing with Dallas, too.”

Q: Where are you at in the recruiting process, and what has your experience been like?

Davis: “Colleges are starting to see me and get to know what I can do. Some have offered me, and it’s starting to heat up, so I’m just being patient and waiting.”

Q: What are your expectations for next year?

Davis: “Next year, we want to win state. We’re working hard this offseason. That Westlake game made us really mad, so we’re just going to work harder than ever and try to win.”
