No more daylight saving

Regarding “Senate approves bill to make daylight saving time permanent,” (March 15): One of the most important bills, called the Sunshine Protection Act, just passed the U.S. Senate. Yet I see no media publicity. If passed in the House, this will be one of the most significant pieces of legislation that will impact all United States citizens.

Regarding “Why daylight saving time is unhealthy – a neurologist explains,” (March 10): I am bemused by all the uproar over daylight saving time. Last year at this juncture and again today, a Chronicle article leads me to conclude that, not only is daylight savings a bad idea, even the concept of standard time is wrecking my health. I am told that my well-worn body's sleep rhythms are aligned with the outside world through a biological clock. This yields a “synchrony” that must be very delicate, because when you change it, there's a “circadian misalignment.” I don't know about all that nor am I impressed by that loosely worded language, but I do know that after a couple of days of adjustment, I'm happy as a clam enjoying more daylight hours after dinner, doing things outdoors that actually benefit my health.

For 60-odd years, shifting to daylight savings has been my favorite day of the year. Join me in my call to heed nature's intention for us and simply follow the sun. It rises at a different time every day so we should be waking, eating, working, exercising, shopping, playing and retiring at different times every day. Let's call it Daylight Exactly Time.

Gene Fisseler, Houston Well, since there are many who say “follow the science,” why do we not listen to the doctors stating the harm caused by daylight savings? DST was used significantly as far back as World War I. However, the real reason for keeping it was the 1970s energy crisis.

We do not need, as some have said, permanent DST. Just let our lives follow nature's natural rhythm instead of a forced change. DST needs to go away permanently. Gerald Gibson, Spring
