Texas A&M grabs another NIT win

COLLEGE STATION — Quenton Jackson scored 17 points as Texas A&M routed Oregon 75-60 in the second round of the NIT on Saturday at Reed Arena.

Manny Obaseki had 11 points for the Aggies (2512). Wade Taylor IV and Henry Coleman III both scored 10. Tyrece Radford had 11 rebounds and scored eight points.

N’Faly Dante had 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Ducks (20-15).

The Aggies’ victory was the 300th for Williams in his coaching career.

“It’s special — not just for me but for everybody,” Jackson said of his coach’s milestone. “He has done so much and he has given so much to this game and it’s great to see him rewarded.”

A&M, which has won nine of their last 10, advanced to host Wake Forest (25-9), an 80-74 winner over Virginia Commonweal­th, on Wednesday in the NIT quarterfin­als. The Aggies have reached the NIT quarterfin­als four times in program history, having last gotten there in 2005.

OHIO 65, RICE 64

Mark Sears hit a layup at the buzzer to help the Bobcats hold off the Owls in the first round of the College Basketball Invitation­al at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Jason Carter led Ohio (25-9) with a game-high 26 points. Rice (16-17) got a team-high 20 points from Carl Pierre, who made a late jumper to put the Owls up 64-63.

Ohio forged a 27-26 halftime lead and could not shake Rice until the end.

UNC ASHEVILLE 80 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 68

Drew Pember scored 17 points as the Bulldogs knocked off the Lumberjack­s in the first round of the College Basketball Invitation­al in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Tajion Jones added 16 points for UNC Asheville (17-14). Sadaidrien­e Hall and Gavin Kensmil both had 13 points for Stephen F. Austin (22-10).

MILLER BACK AT XAVIER

Former Arizona men’s coach Sean Miller returned to Xavier on Saturday, less than a year after the Wildcats fired him amid an ongoing NCAA investigat­ion that’s stretched nearly five years.

Miller replaces Travis Steele, his former assistant who was fired Wednesday by the Cincinnati-based Musketeers after four seasons.
