Jane Mackintosh, age 82, was born on July 25, 1939 and went to be with Jesus on April 9, 2022. She passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side.

Jane, the youngest of six, was born and raised in Wise County, Virginia. She was educated in mother Edith Stewart Adams’ general store; on outings with her father J. Fred Adams, a lineman who brought electricity to the valley; in the Baptist Church; in the Appalachian Mountains; and in Norton’s public schools. Her Burton High School Senior Annual (1957) aptly noted “She may look timid and shy, but she’s a friend on whom you can rely.” Jane attended East Tennessee State University and graduated with a degree in business in 1961. She was a diligent student, participated in numerous extracurricular activities such as the annual wheelbarrow races and soap box derbies, and enjoyed playing bridge with her professors.

After graduation, she was employed as a research analyst by Eastman Chemical in Kingsport, Tennessee. Then, upon relocating to

Atlanta, Georgia, she worked as a trust analyst for the First National Bank of Georgia. In Atlanta, she fell in love with a promising young Army officer. After a short courtship, Hartley and Jane were married on June 20, 1964 at the Fort McPherson chapel. Together they built a family with the addition of Cindy (1966) and David (1970). As a military wife, Jane guided her family through fifteen moves, serving as the sole parent during Hartley’s two Vietnam era deployments. As a devoted mother, Jane ensured her family always felt at home and that her children never lacked for opportunity. She emphasized education and set the standard by earning her MBA while raising two small children.

Following Hartley’s Army retirement, Gulf Oil moved the family to Philadelphia and subsequently to

The Woodlands, Texas in 1981, where Jane insisted on planting roots. As her children grew, Jane returned to the workforce helping a neighbor establish a direct mail advertising business. Then, as a legal secretary, she assisted attorney Edward K. White in establishing a law firm. Later, Jane worked for attorney Tom Fitzhugh for many years through multiple firms and roles, retiring as general manager of the Longshore Institute in 1998. In retirement,

Jane and Hartley traveled extensively but always found great comfort in returning to The Woodlands. Jane also enjoyed the comradery of the PEO Sisterhood, counseled friends in need, and adored her grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Jane was sustained by her strong love of the Lord. She was very active as a member of church groups everywhere she lived. She and Hartley joined

The Woodlands Methodist Church in 1981. Over the years, Jane participated in a myriad of church activities as well as in Community Bible Study.

Jane is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Joyce, Jim and Jerry. She is survived by her husband Hartley; sister Carolyn and spouse Jay Wolf; brother Harry Adams; sisters-inlaw Patricia Adams and Stephanie Adams; son

David; daughter Cindy and spouse Jeffrey Wade; and grandchildren Jack Wade and; Andrew Wade and spouse Natalie. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 26th at 10:00 o’clock a.m. in the Robb Chapel of The Woodlands Methodist Church, 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive. In lieu of flowers or usual remembrances, the family requests donations be made to The Woodlands Methodist Foundation or the M.D. Anderson Hospital

Foundation.
