Rivas, Cubs stomp Pirates to end skid

CHICAGO — Alfonso Rivas had three hits and five RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs stopped a four-game slide by pounding the Pittsburgh Pirates 21-0 on Saturday.

Rivas, who was recalled Friday from Triple-A Iowa, capped Chicago’s eight-run second with a three-run homer. He tacked on RBI singles in the fourth and fifth.

The Cubs finished with 23 hits in their most lopsided shutout win dating to at least 1901.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 5, METS 2: Arizona’s offense had a season-high 11 hits, Humberto Castellano­s pitched five solid innings and the home team cooled off New York by beating them.

MARINERS 13, ROYALS 7: Ty France homered to cap a six-run eighth inning that broke a 7-all tie and Seattle survived for a home victory over Kansas City.

GIANTS 5, NATIONALS 2: Alex Wood pitched five effective innings and the bullpen closed it out, leading San Francisco to a road victory over Washington.

BREWERS 5, PHILLIES 3: Willy Adames stole home, Hunter Renfroe homered and Adrian Houser tossed six solid innings to lead visiting Milwaukee by Philadelph­ia.

TWINS 9, WHITE SOX 2: Byron Buxton and Luis Arraez each had four hits, helping Dylan Bundy and host Minnesota beat banged-up Chicago.

YANKEES 6, GUARDIANS 5: Fans in the right-field bleachers pelted Cleveland outfielder­s with bottles, cans and debris in a chaotic scene moments after Isiah KinerFalef­a and pinch-hitter Gleyber Torres got RBI hits with two outs in the ninth inning to lift New York to a home victory.

RANGERS 2, ATHLETICS 0: Brad Miller hit a key single in the eighth inning that drove in two runs after a replay review as visiting Texas beat Oakland.

CARDINALS 5, REDS 0: Dakota Hudson pitched 6 2 ⁄3 innings of one-hit ball, Paul Goldschmid­t drove in two runs and St. Louis beat injury-plagued Cincinnati, which was handed its 11th straight loss, on the road.

ROCKIES 3, TIGERS 2: Austin Gomber tossed six scoreless innings as visiting Colorado spoiled the major league pitching debut of Beau Brieske with a victory in the nightcap of a doublehead­er.

PADRES 3, DODGERS 2 Austin Nola hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning for host San Diego, who won to snap a 10-game losing streak to rival Los Angeles.
