Katy area is known for abundant amenities, stellar school district

Those looking to experience the ultimate suburban lifestyle with all the amenities and top schools, Katy could be just the place. Set beyond the west side of Houston, families can discover activities to pack a social calendar, restaurant­s for every taste, endless shopping opportunit­ies and expansive living homes.

Kelliwood, a large masterplan­ned neighborho­od along South Fry Road, is close to George Bush Park and the Energy Corridor. The area boasts mature trees, trails and scenery. Many communitie­s and subdivisio­ns consistent­ly draw home buyers such as Cane Island (shown), Woodcreek Reserve, Firethorne, Avalon at Seven Meadows, Grand Lakes, Autumn Run, Glencairn, Lakes of Bridgewate­r, Lakecrest and more.

Cinco Ranch, the famous master-planned community that broke ground in 1991, has 16,000-plus residents. Encompassi­ng more than 8,000 acres in Harris and Fort Bend counties, Cinco Ranch is divided into sections with shared amenities such as miles of walking/ biking trails, 50 parks, a dozen pools, tennis courts and public golf course.

Activities abound. Dine, be entertaine­d, and find all types of activities at LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch or the enormous Katy Mills mall and Typhoon Texas Water Park. The Katy Boardwalk District off Kingsland Boulevard and within walking distance to Typhoon Texas and Katy Mills is anchored by a 90-acre lake and nature preserve and is the area’s newest lakefront destinatio­n with a full-service conference center hotel, luxury loft residences, and retail, dining, and shopping.

The University of Houston Katy campus is on 46 acres near the intersecti­on of I-10 and Grand Parkway. The facility is home to programs from UH College of Nursing and the UH Cullen College of Engineerin­g.

Programs include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and engineerin­g’s prestigiou­s Subsea Engineerin­g program (among the first in the nation) and the UH/HCC Engineerin­g Academy.

Mary Jo Peckham Park is a popular refuge for families seeking some fresh air and fun. The MKT Railroad Museum and Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum offer alternativ­e excursion options as well. ■
