River Oaks a sought-after, admired residential area in Houston

-

One of Houston’s most beloved and admired neighborhoods of mansions and homes on wide-open lots dotting meandering roads, River Oaks, which began in the 1920s, used to be accessible only from a dirt road.

Over the years, River Oaks has become a prized central location with significant architectural landmarks edging Buffalo Bayou, the River Oaks Shopping District, Highland Village and an array of restaurants, shopping and parks to enjoy. River Oaks Country Club dots the end of River Oaks Boulevard.

Some of the well-known architects that have worked in River Oaks include John Staub, Birdsall P. Briscoe, Hiram Salisbury, and Howard Barnstone.

Two historical homes, Bayou Bend and Rienzi, administered by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, are neighborhood treasures. Bayou Bend, which highlights a collection of American decorative arts, was a collaborative design by Staub and Briscoe. Staub also designed Rienzi, which now houses a European decorative arts collection.

Residents also enjoy a wealth of luxe shopping with well-known designers and a wide range of dining experiences throughout the area with The River Oaks District as well as Highland Village. Foodies will not be disappointed with the extensive offerings throughout the area.

Upper Kirby is a booming place to visit for shopping, dining and also living in luxury residences. Located between Westheimer Road and Bissonnet, Upper Kirby showcases unique vintage British red phone booths on random corners. These anachronistic booths that light up at night are a surprise twist in an otherwise urban and modern Upper Kirby.

Additionally, an estimated 7,000 weekly visitors browse Levy Park’s farmers market, public gardens, dog park, treehouse and play park, and community events.
