Creativity is Focus of HCC’s Media, Visual & Performing Arts Center of Excellence
Although Houston’s nickname is Space City, it also can be called Arts City with its music venues, museums, theaters, ballet, opera, symphony and arts events. Houston Community College fosters and supports that creative expression through its Media, Visual & Performing Arts Center of Excellence (MVAP COE).
At MVAP COE, students can explore their interests in media, visual and performing arts with faculty artists and trained industry professionals who guide them every step of the way.
Audio Recording Technology, Dance, Drama, Filmmaking, Music, Music Business, and Studio Art faculty prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to transfer to competitive undergraduate programs and enter creative occupations.
The college’s innovative Media Technology program is state-of-the-art where students have access to exhibition, performance, recording, screening and studio spaces where those wishing to be multimedia artists and animators can create animation, web development, and visual effects for television, movies, video games, and digital media.
Visual Arts program students can study art history, art design and studio arts where they investigate artmaking as an adaptive process that involves informed and critical decision making, develop technical skills that demonstrate the functions of the visual elements and principles of art and design, and build independent problem-solving skills to contribute inventively and critically to culture through art creation.
The Performing Arts programs include music, dance and drama. The Dance Program teaches technical proficiency in dance technique and performance, including improvisational, compositional and performance techniques. In the Drama Program, students learn technical and creative components of theater production and performance.
Students develop keyboard, music and literature theory and performance skills in the Music Program, and can also learn music business, music arrangers, songwriters, producers and performers in the Music Business Program.
The HCC Media, Visual & Performing Arts Programs is one of only three programs in Texas that is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
