Dr. Lindley (Lin) Addison Cates died on June 16, 2022, at the age of 89 years after recently relocating to San Diego, California.
He received degrees in Pharmacy (B.S.) at the University of Minnesota and in Medicinal Chemistry (M.S. and Ph.D.) at the University of Colorado. In college, Lin was a member of Kappa Psi, Rho Chi, and Phi Lambda Upsilon. He was a member of the University of Houston College of Pharmacy faculty for 37 years. Beginning in 1961 he was an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor (in 1968), and later Department Chair and Associate Dean. He stated that he felt his finest recognition of teaching and research achievements came from his colleagues, and he was elected a Fellow of, and was an officer in, three professional societies: American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Academy of Pharmacy, and American Association of College and Teachers. Research, principally in the area of developing potential anticancer drugs, was supported for over 25 years by The National Cancer Institute and a state foundation resulting in over 60 publications and three patents. He was part owner of a small Houston pharmaceutical company, at which he was instrumental in developing several products and analytical procedures. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1956 beginning as 2nd Lieutenant and decommissioning as Captain.
Lin was a member of Christ Church United Methodist Church and The Wesleyans in The Woodlands, Texas. He would like to be best remembered as a good Christian, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, roles he endeavored to fulfill to the best of his ability. As Lin wrote: “I leave Ruth Elizabeth Gammell Cates, my beloved wife whom I cherished during 65 years of marriage; my wonderful children, Catherine Johnson (Robert Johnson) and Dr. Douglas Cates (Dr. Susan Ross); three marvelous grandchildren, Hannah Walker (Dr. Nicholas Walker), Garrett Johnson (Susan Fontaine), Alexander Emerson Cates; four greatgrandchildren, Helen, Karl, George, and Ivey. Also, my half-brother, Glenn Cates. I depart this world secure in the knowledge that we will all someday be united in the afterlife with Christ Jesus, our Lord, and Savior. In the words of our family motto: Deo Fidens Proficio (I go forward trusting in God).”
Memorials may be given to The Methodist Children’s Home 1111 Herring Ave, Waco Tx 76708.
